Hummingbirds are my absolute favorite bird. Saw this one at La Selva, 2011. Hope to see many more with 9 days there!
We spent a morning in La Selva in 2011 doing transplanting work. Can’t wait to get back!
Lonestar SAS (stands for Serious About Science) is a group of four teachers from varying high schools in the Round Rock Independent School District. We all teach some variation of life science – biology or environmental Science. I teach AP Environmental Science at Westwood High School, in Austin, TX, and I’m the team leader for our team. Mostly being team leader involved contacting all of the other amazing ladies on our team and pestering them to apply with me! We applied and were selected for the Northrop Grumman Eco Classroom program, run by Conservation International. We will be traveling to Costa Rica on Sunday to meet up with three other teams from different parts of the United States, to do field research at La Selva Biological Reserve in Costa Rica. We will get to learn all kinds of cool research protocols that tropical scientists use to study rainforest ecology. We’ll be at La Selva and living, working, and researching in the rainforest for nine days!!! I absolutely can’t wait to get started! There’s so much I hope to learn, and so many things I hope to be able to teach my students from this experience.
In addition to general field work, we will have the opportunity to do our own research project in the rainforest as well. Our general question is to determine how much carbon can be sequestered in a specific area of the rainforest. Please see the “about” section for our specific driving question, plan, and how I plan to develop our research experience into a really cool project for my students next year (Sorry class of 2013!).
I was fortunate to travel to Costa Rica in 2011 with the Toyota International Teacher Program, and we spent one morning at La Selva. It was honestly one of the most amazingly biodiverse places in Costa Rica (which in and of itself is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet), so I feel extremely lucky that our team was selected to spend so much time in this amazing place!
